Camille's eighth month: A review

When I was in the thick of sleep troubles and really struggling with...thinking, a friend of mine who is also a new mom said, "Trust me, Bao.  It does get better.  I think around 7 or 8 months is when it gets more fun.  You will start to really enjoy her."

It's totally true!

It's not that I didn't enjoy her before.  But with the vast improvement in the sleep department, I feel like my mind is clearer and I have more energy to enjoy her.  It also helps that she gets cuter and more fun everyday!

Loooves the strings

New this month!
  • Camille started reaching out for us.  Arms out.  "Pick me up, Servant!"
  • Growling!  She still has the high-pitch scream.  But since I almost always tell her to stop in a stern voice, she has screamed much less and instead has replaced most of the screams with this low-pitch growl.  It is much better than the shrieks!
  • One day, she just started babbling.  It is distinct and unmistakable.  Very different from what she was doing before.  Now, her vocalizations are very speechlike.  Full of a variety of consonants and vowel blends.  "Nhai nhai nhai nhai nhai!  Da da da da!  Nga nga nga nga nga!!"  Since Chinese & Vietnamese are both monosyllabic and largely onomatopoeic, this is what we've picked up from Camille's vocalizations thus far:
    • Masticate (chew)
    • Here
    • Tooth/teeth
    • Banyan tree
    • Throne
    • Poop
Camille is soooo brilliant! Right?! :D
  • She likes to play with strings.  Um, things like power cords and USB cables.  She likes to chew on them.  Currently, her favorite toy is a toy strap.  A strap that helps latch toys onto our carrier.  She likes to play with this strap by itself...*bite bite bite*
  • She also likes remote controls, computers, and cell phones.  But I think that's pretty normal of most babies nowadays.
  • Camille's attention span has gotten to be longer.  She can play longer by herself before getting bored and whining.  Before, we would hand her any new toy and she would drop the one she was currently holding to grab the new object.  But now, if she likes her current toy, she will continue to play with it and ignore our offer.
  • Peek-a-boo is something that entertains her more now than before.  I don't know if she completely gets object permanence yet.  I would hide my phone (one of the most desirable objects for Camille) under a pillow with her looking...and only on a couple of occasions has she reached under the pillow to look for it.  But when I play peek-a-boo with her and consistently pop out on the left and then on the right of the blanket, she can predict which way I was going to pop out next and would turn her gaze that way!  Amazing!  (Sorry if I sound like I'm bragging.  I'm really not.  I am just amazed by how God has created her!)
  • Her fine motor skills are starting to show up a lot more.  She's been picking at things with her index fingers more.  She has a ways to go in mastering the pincer grip, but she continues to amaze us with her collaboration of index finger and opposable thumb!
  • Teeth!  Two finally popped out.
  • She's just sort of starting to scoot/creep (which reminds me of TLC).  She used to roll to get to wherever she needed to go.  Now she has found a more efficient way to scoot to her destination.  She uses all limbs in this effort, but her belly is usually on the ground still.
  • As I'd mentioned before, Camille loves to stand.  I think it's so she can be on our same eye level and see more.  Her legs are actually pretty strong, despite their twiggy appearance.  When I prop her up next to furniture, she will hang on and stand for what seems to be as long as she doesn't feel like she's unable.  Wow, what a deep lesson in trust!
The specs
As of March 29, 2011:
  • Weight: 14 lb flat - 5%ile (eeks!)
  • Height: 27 in - 75%ile
  • Teeth: 2, bottom, center
    Milestones & important events
March 14 - Camille started having a runny nose that later turned into a cold that lasted for over 2 weeks. Nothing serious...just a bad case of green snot.

March 15 - Camille's first trip to the ER.  Don't worry, it was for Chin's tweaked back.  He's okay now.

    March 21 - Camille & I appeared on Komo4 News!

March 25 - Very distinctly, Camille started babbling today!  We also got to enjoy a beautiful day at Pike Place Market, where Camille met her first horse and got splashed in the face with flying fish juice :P

April 1 - Teeth popped out!

April 2 - Teething > lots of salival production > excessive saliva drooled & swallowed > lots of loose stool > Camille's very first diaper rash.  That's right!  First one!

April 6 - On the way home from getting gas at Issaquah Costco, Camille was babbling in the backseat and said, "Daddy!"  She has said it again a few times since then.  But fear not, competative parentkind, she did not intentionally mean "Daddy."

April 8 - First time on the swings!  She liked it!  Oh yeah...and also first [very mild] sun burn.

    She was laughing!

    Favorite part...
Camille is just more fun!  I'm also thankful for the many opportunities to meet up with folks and even have play dates with little ones.  We love to socialize!

    Least favorite...
I'm not such a big fan of Camille pooping 6 times a day.  Not only is it a pain to change poopy diapers, pooping this much means she's not keeping in some of the nutrients she needs.  She only pooped 6 times a day on one occasion.  But she has been pooping 4+ times a day consistently.  :(

    Shout outs
...To Grandma Ng for watching Camille several times this month so that I could get out of the house to either run errands or just to have fun!

...To the nursery people at Rainier Avenue Church.  They are amazing!  They also told us that Camille is the loudest screamer they've ever heard, though.  Oops!

    Discoveries & reflections
...Camille looks really good in pink.  I'm not really into pink, but I don't object having Camille in a "non gender neutral" outfit either.  I have just discovered that with Camille's fair complexion, she looks really beautiful in light pink.

...When cute clothes get dirty, I am willing to spot clean and put them on Camille again.  If the clothes are not cute, one drop of drool can legitimately warrant a wardrobe change.

...This is how I know Camille is my kid: she does not like books.  Well, she actually only likes one book.  It's called All Things Bright and Beautiful.  And she only likes one particular page in this 10-page book.  It's the page with a mirror.  She looks at herself and smiles.  My kid!

...I am not a big fan of when Camille goes down for a nap and then wakes up after 40 minutes.  If this happens during her morning nap, that's fine.  She usually lasts until she needs to go down for the afternoon nap.  But if she gets a short afternoon nap, there would be a strong likelihood of a meltdown around 8pm.  Let's say she goes down at 3pm.  She usually stays down until 5 or even 5:30.  But on the rare occasion, she will wake up at 3:40 and after half an hour of just playing in her crib (no crying), she is just up.  This then means that she will need to stay up from 3:40 to 9pm.  That's not a big deal for an adult or even a toddler.  But for a 7-month-old, that is a long stretch of time without a nap.  She is not used to getting a third nap anymore so she will be awake...but life is just miserable for her parents on the occasions that she does have meltdowns!

...I often need to remind myself: It is NOT her fault.  It's not her fault if she wakes up earlier than normal.  It's not her fault if she doesn't want to nurse or eat.  It's especially not her fault if she poops all the time.

...I stress out about short/missed naps a lot.  But, you know, it all usually works out in the end.  She just learns to be flexible :)

    Isn't she lovely?
...It feels like I just wrote the 7th month review a couple of weeks ago.  And now she's already 8 months old?!  I feel like she's growing really fast.  This might be because I'm going back to school in two months (*gulp*).

...Nursing a child with new [really sharp] teeth = scary.  If she's playing with something and biting on it just before latching on, it's almost a guarantee that she will bite.  So, not on purpose.  Otherwise, she has not purposely bitten me while nursing...yet.

...Eating bean stew for 3 days in a row makes for a very farty baby.

...Sometimes, I feel guilty that all my conversations revolve around baby.  Because being a mom is my full time job, it is hard for me to think about other things.  As much as I crave for real, rich conversations that are not baby related, I find that my mind will always wander back into thinking about Camille.

...Many of my friends say that around 7 or 8 months is when a mom will start to want another one.  Yep, pretty much!!

Daddy loves Camille a little bit, I think. :)

    Camille's second month: A review

So, I guess I should mention that if there is one thing I have learned in this wild mothering journey, it would be: If you're waiting for the perfect moment to create the perfect blog post, it isn't going to happen.  See?  I don't even have the brain power to be witty about that last statement.  *sigh*

    The specs
    As of September 16 (1-month check-up)
    • Weight: 7 lb 13 oz (10-25th percentile)
    • Height: 21 in (50-75th percentile)
    • Head: 13.75 in (5-10th percentile)
    Milestones & important events
September 17 - Camille's first time at Jollibee.

September 20 - Chin's first day back at work. This was a sad day. Chin missed us so much that he had to come home for lunch. He didn't eat much. Just swooped up the little one and snuggled with her. GT came up to help me adjust to taking care of Camille without Chin. I'm SO thankful for her!

September 23 - My first day of being a full-time mom...flying solo. It went okay :)

September 26 - Camille decided to stay up ALL night. From midnight until 10am. With church starting at 11, we just packed her up and went to church...completely sleep-deprived, but we were glad that we went because of the great sermon on fellowshipping and the real sense of community that we felt when other parents surrounded us with support. We love our church!

September 29 - First time giving Camille a bath without Chin. Wow, that was harder than I thought. But, thankfully, I did not drop her.

October 1 - Camille attended her first wedding!  She wore her first dress, thanks to her little friend Makayla!

Our little lady with the happiest couple of the evening, the Schultheisses!
October 7 - Kind of on a whim, we started cloth-diapering Camille.  I wasn't completely ready to do it, but it worked out well!!  A lot easier than I thought.

    Our big booty girl
October 9 - Again, on a whim, I started Elimination Communication.  Since her first day of life, I've been making this "psst psst psst" sound whenever she poops so she could associate the sound with pooping.  When I put her over the toilet and made the sound, she just let it all out!  I thought it was a fluke at first, but subsequent attempts have been very successful.  So, we're on our way to being diaper free!  Okay...maybe not quite :)

    Poo in the loo
October 11 - I think I saw Camille smiling. I'm pretty sure it was one of her first social smiles. Also, today I found a smear of poop on the back of my hand and didn't know where it came from...and, more importantly, didn't care!

    Favorite part...
Hard to say.  But I think I am enjoying motherhood a little more since I'm getting more used to taking care of Camille.  I am loving watching her develop her own personality, especially as she is learning to smile a bit more.

    Least favorite...
Hands down: Chin going back to work.  Followed by how stinkin' hard it is to put Camille to sleep at night.

    Shout outs
...To all my friends who have been incredibly supportive in this not-always-natural breastfeeding journey.

...Again, to GT who came up to spend a few days with us as I adjusted to taking care of Camille without Chin.  It was only a few days but it helped me a lot!  Thank you, Sis!

...To these amazing Wee Gallery art cards given to Camille by Auntie Krista.  Camille is really curious about them and is starting to spend a lot of time studying them.

Camille loves these black & white art cards!
...To cousin Donovan who continues to shower Camille with tons of hand-me-downs!

Note that her outfit says "Thank heaven for little boys"
...To the Kalepos for letting Camille borrow their Boppy swing!  It helped us on several occasions when Camille just refused to sleep in her bed.  The Kalepos also passed on about a dozen different pacifiers for us to try out.  Camille has her favorites...and is kind of developing a dependency on them at night.  Ruh roh...

    Discoveries & reflections
...I have started sitting in the front seat with Chin, leaving Camille to fend for herself in the backseat.  Which is usually no problem since she often ends up falling asleep in a moving vehicle anyway!

...I really miss Chin after he went back to work. :(

...I felt that Camille would be nice and cute to everyone else...and would save her worst side for me.  I expressed this in an email I sent to Chin the night before his first day back at work (composed in the middle of the night, in tears):
    Hi Honey,

I already miss you so much!

Camille finally JUST fell asleep after being cranky for the past two
and a half hours.  You know how in "Happy Gilmore," Ben Stiller was mean to all the old people but was super nice to everyone else? I feel that Camille is Ben Stiller and I'm the old grandma.  She shows her worst side to me and no one else sees it.

I am going to miss having you around all the time. You really are the
    best partner and best dad!

I love you and appreciate you very much, Chin. Can't wait to see you
    this afternoon!

    Love you,

    Bao
We lovingly named her "Jerk Baby"
...I am mean to Camille.  I mean, really mean.  But she started it!  As mentioned above, there was one night where Camille kept us up the whole time.  That was the worst incident.  But there were other nights where she would be up either fussing or just simply wanted to play.  On nights where Chin had to work the next day, Chin would often have to go to the other room to sleep.  There I was, with a baby who's a complete jerk...and no husband!  I felt so lonely and upset.  On more than one occasion, I turned this frustration toward Camille.  There was one time where I yanked the pacifier out of her mouth and taunted her.  Man, I feel bad typing that out.  But I did it.  I am mean.

...If a baby has been awake all day, don't assume she will sleep at night.  And if she slept the entire day, don't assume she'll stay up all night.

...I have fast, forceful milk letdown.  I hate it!!  Camille chokes on the milk and would become very frustrated.  She would then unlatch and milk sprays everywhere (up to 15 inches)!!  After researching a ton online, I decided to send out a desperate call for help in the form of an email to some of the best breastfeeding experts: my friends.  I am so thankful for their responses.  Many useful tips.  But mostly just comfort and support for the weary.  I am so grateful for these gals!

It's pretty easy to love her when she is this adorable
...One time, I was watching a "Dirty Jobs" episode filmed at a dairy farm/factory and I wished they made milking machines for humans.

...Camille would often get hungry just as soon as I start eating.

...I love watching how much Chin adores this little girl.

My favorite sets of furrowed brows in the whole world
...We get a lot of comments that Camille looks like a boy.  I don't think wearing cousin Donovan's clothes helps her out a lot. :)

...I love the fact that Camille's crib is side-carred to our bed!!

...It is so frustrating to put Camille to bed.  She would feed and fall asleep.  As soon as I put her down, she'd wake up (for all you parents reading this, I can see you all nodding :P).  She just wants to suck on something as she falls asleep...although she doesn't always take the pacifier right away.  Oh no no.  It takes us about 5-10 attempts each time to give her the pacifier.  Once she latches on to the pacifier, it'd just be a matter of minutes before she falls asleep and it falls out of her mouth.  And then we start all over again with the many attempts to get her to latch onto it.  We both go back and forth with whether to let her "cry it out."  Before we were pregnant, we were sure that we would go with the cry-it-out method and train her to sleep from a young age.  During pregnancy, I started researching more into attachment parenting and found how emotionally scarring this method could be.  Also, my parents embraced a lot of the attachment parenting philosophies (breastfeeding, elimination communication, co-sleeping, etc.) and, in many ways, I feel that they did parenting right.  So, we decided not to do cry-it-out.  But on nights where she was just a real jerk, it's really tempting.

...It is really okay to ignore bad advice.

...I tend to do a lot of research on the internet.  I have learned that what I ought to do is ask my mom and a few of my trusty friends.  I am still learning this.

    She's 2 months old!

    Our church

I recently saw someone from our old church at a grocery store.  She's a Chinese woman in her 50's.  This is how our conversation went:

She: So are you going to a white church now?
Me: Well, it's a neighborhood church in the Rainier Valley...
She: Ohhhhhh...so some blacks & Mexicans, too. [naturally, this statement is accompanied by a generalized look of fear]

    Precisely :)

    Rollin' with the homies

We had Vietnamese rolls with our small group tonight.  What a delightful group of people!!  We have loved getting to know each person and learning from one another's candid sharing.

    Steven & Lindsey

Krista & Lance (aren't they a handsome couple?)

    Bao & Chin

Our first rolls!  We all did a splendid job :)

    Fast fowarding!!

Lots to catch up on!  We are back in the States and here's a brief recap.  Previously, on Ngium...

Re-entry was difficult for us because we missed Macau so much.  But God is faithful and we were delighted to reconnect with many good friends.  This is picture of me harvesting cherries from our backyard in Issaquah (now Chung and Alice's house) to make a pie.

     Newborn triplets
     3-year-old Hannah

In September of '06, my brother & his wife had triplets -- Hannah, David, and Ben!  David & Ben had congenital health issues and passed away at 15 and 26 months, respectively.  They were wonderful boys and have left behind an adorable & very sharp older sister.

    before
    after

In the Summer of '07, we started renovating our friend Richard's house in Seattle and started renting it in the Fall.  By "we," I mean us and a TON of our kind-hearted friends.

Chin completely surprised me with a trip to Vegas in December '07!  That was fantastic!!

In March of '08, we rendezvoused with the Klines in Viet Nam!  It was really good to see them before they started producing another stinkin' cute baby, Brandt.

In June of '08 came Anna Jane (born to Alice and Chung, who's Chin's older brother)!  A little ball of energy who I often refer to as, "My niece Anna Jane.  Half girl.  Half squirrel."  She is one of the smartest kids I know!!

Another smart kid that I know is me -- Bao Ng.  I got into the UW School of Nursing and started there in Summer '08.  The MEPN/GEPN program was where I met some amazing folks who will hopefully remain in my life forever.  I graduated with a BSN in Summer '09 and am currently in a Family Nurse Practitioner program ... that never ends.

Chin picked up volleyball and has been very passionate about this game!!  Here is a picture of him going up for a ball.  He'll say, "Don't post that picture!  My timing's way off!"  But I don't know any better and I think it's a pretty cool shot of him jumping. :)

In front of San Marco - Venice, Italy

During Spring Break of '09, GT, Anh Nguyen, Chi Mien, Chin & I had an opportunity to travel to Italy!  It was my first time in Europe and it was so memorable.

In March of '09, we found out that we were pregnant!  During a routine, mid-pregnancy ultrasound, we were told that our little girl (who we called "Peanut") had some severe health issues that would put her life in jeopardy.  Three weeks later, she passed away.  We named her Penelope Emmanuelle.  We still miss her and we love her very much!

We found a new church community to be a part of -- Rainier Avenue Church -- and we have discovered that we are enjoying being part of this body more and more as time goes by.

Our friends Yosh & Kym got married in November of '09 and gave us a great excuse to go visit Hawai'i for the first time!  That was one of the most pleasant trips we've ever taken.  Because of that trip, we wanted to call our next baby "MacNut."

So, that's the recap, folks!  Much more to come. :)
